Set up 2FA for OpenAI

Before you start

Available MFA methods vary by device, region and account. This guide describes the authenticator-code option.

Open the security settings

1. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Security and login.
2. Under Multi-factor authentication, choose the authenticator app method and follow the setup instructions.

Connect Authenticator

Open Authenticator and choose +. Scan the setup QR code, or use manual entry if the service provides a setup key. Give the account a recognizable label and save it. Keep the QR code and key private.

Submit the current one-time app code in the OpenAI setup screen to finish.

MFA applies across OpenAI services, including ChatGPT and the API Platform. Keep the recovery options shown by OpenAI. Push notifications, SMS and passkeys are separate methods.

If a code is rejected, check the account label and device time, then try a fresh code. Troubleshoot a rejected code.
