Set up 2FA for X

Before you start

Have access to your X password and confirmed email. Choose the authentication-app method, rather than SMS.

Open the security settings

1. Open Settings and privacy → Security and account access → Security.
2. Open Two-factor authentication, select Authentication app and choose Start. Complete any password or email confirmation.

Connect Authenticator

Open Authenticator and choose +. Scan the setup QR code, or use manual entry if the service provides a setup key. Give the account a recognizable label and save it. Keep the QR code and key private.

After adding the entry, choose Next in X, submit the current app code and choose Verify.

Keep a way back in

Finish the confirmation screen and preserve any backup code offered. Authenticator-app codes are distinct from X’s paid SMS availability.

If a code is rejected, check the account label and device time, then try a fresh code. Troubleshoot a rejected code.
